Recovering From Last Winter, Preparing for the Next One

It's Not All Fun

It’s Not All Fun

As we prepare for this winter season, many small businesses are still recovering from the last winter. The deadline is fast approaching for small businesses impacted by last season’s winter storms (specifically, those that struck New England between January 28 to 28) to apply for the low-interest Economic Injury Disaster Loans of the U.S. Small Business Administration. The same deadline applies for SBA EIDL applications for small businesses (“private non-profit organizations” is the term the SBA uses) in Tennessee that were impacted by the severe winter storms and flooding that occurred on February 15 – 22, 2015. Insuring against storm-related losses is generally more cost-effective than borrowing to finance the losses after the storm has occurred. Now is the time to review your insurance policy to make sure that your coverage will protect your business this winter.

Protect Against Porch Pirates

Be Sure to Sign for the Delivery

Be Sure to Sign for the Delivery

The newspapers are reporting a large volume of thefts due to so-called “porch pirates”, thieves who take delivery packages left outside of doorways without signatures. With the holiday season underway, deliverymen are unusually busy bringing gifts to homes and offices for recipients who are not always available to sign for them. Small businesses are also vulnerable, particularly home-based businesses.

You can take steps to reduce the risk of loss. First, try to schedule your deliveries when you know someone will be available to sign for the package. I pay for the delivery services to e-mail me in advance to schedule deliveries. This has been my longstanding practice, as I don’t want to be interrupted when on a client videoconference or participating in a live media interview. It also has the advantage of thwarting the porch pirates. A number of delivery services, such as FedEx, UPS, DHL and Amazon Locker, offer various options to schedule deliveries. You can also arrange to have your packages delivered to another location to ensure secure delivery. And of course, always require a signature – for packages you send to others and for those you have delivered to you. It is an extra layer of protection against loss.

Planning for Long-Term Care

Sunday, December 6th, 2015

The Sunday paper has an excellent article from the wire about the crisis in financing long-term care. The article begins with the story of a couple who worked and saved throughout their careers, only to see their accumulated lifetime savings depleted within five years of one spouse moving into an assisted living facility after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease.  The article goes on to cite sobering findings about the levels of accumulated assets and insurance coverage among senior citizens. Small business owners may be able to benefit from group long-term care policies for themselves and their employees. This article should motivate readers to investigate long-term care insurance coverage, if they have not already done so.

International Volunteer Day

International Volunteer Day

International Volunteer Day

Today is International Volunteer Day. Many non-profit organizations will host public events to promote their contributions to the community and to recruit new volunteers to join them. Local chapters of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, for example, will often take the opportunity afforded by International Volunteer Day to make their communities aware of the contributions that the Red Cross makes at local, national and international levels. It is a great way to show how individual community volunteers are contributing to a better world. Today, the Red Cross will also promote campaigns to attract more volunteers both for first aid training and for disaster risk reduction training (to identify key hazards and prepare for them). There are a number of ways that small businesses can participate in International Volunteer Day. Some may encourage their employees to volunteer, particularly for causes that align with the missions of their businesses. Others may give employees paid time off to volunteer. Still others may choose to sponsor events for local non-profit organizations such as, for example, providing food and beverage for the local volunteer events. There are many ways to contribute, even for small businesses with more limited resources.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities

The Importance of Inclusion

The Importance of Inclusion

Earlier this year, the United Nations convened the Third World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai, Japan to negotiate a new global framework for disaster risk reduction. Particular emphasis was paid to the needs and contributions of disabled persons. In particular, the needs of disabled persons must be taken into consideration to ensure that evacuation facilities are accessible and that medical and other personal needs of disabled persons are addressed in emergency planning. Today, the third of December, is the day that the UN recognizes as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. UN Secretary-General Ban-Ki Moon specifically stressed the needs of disabled persons in disaster-related emergencies. Do you know if you have any disabled persons among your employees? Do you have a plan to provide for their safe evacuation and care in the event of a disaster or serious hazard?
